Teaching English Conversation for Adults
When you meet with this challenge, you first of all speak with your prospective student and learn his or her level of knowledge. When you are sure that the student has adequate knowledge of grammar and has some stock of words you begin with simple conversation: ask questions and receive answers, teach greetings, use the most appropriate vocabulary of everyday speech. Very often after several lessons your student begins to feel sure and is ready to meet his foreign colleges. But sometimes your student has elementary knowledge of English and can’t speak at all. This happens when during previous lessons there was paid little attention to conversation. Then you have to find simple dialogues with everyday speech. It can be travelling – asking for tickets or trains, questioning on profession, dialogues between patron and clark, family scenes, restaurants and others. Find as many dialouges as you can. Train with this material. Ask questions. Ask your student to tell his stories. Watch TV, find new slang expressions and share them with student. This work can be useful and pleasant not only for student, but to teacher as well.
